EY1

Welcome to our EY1 class page. We are so excited to explore our new topics this year whilst having lots of fun!

Language, Literacy and Communication

Phonics

In EY1 we lay the foundations for reading and writing by nurturing phonological awareness. Through fun and interactive activities, children explore sounds and build words. We follow the Jolly Phonics programme, which provides a multisensory approach to learning phonics—essential building blocks for literacy development.

Reading

In EY1 we love reading! We engage with class, individual and sensory reading sessions, allowing the children to develop key strategies such as using picture clues. Our approach ensures that each child progresses at their own pace, building confidence along the way.

Writing

Writing in EY1 is a rich and complex process that draws on a range of skills. Children develop fine motor control, concentration, memory, and expressive language as they learn to write. We encourage creativity and risk-taking in writing, celebrating every effort and fostering a positive attitude towards self-expression.

Numeracy

In EY1, children explore the five key areas of numeracy:

Processes in Mathematics

Number

Data Handling

Measures

Shape and Space

Our lessons are hands-on and engaging, helping children make meaningful connections with mathematical concepts.

Play-Based Learning

Play is at the heart of our classroom and where our children learn vital skills such as turn taking. Through a topic-based approach, we integrate all areas of learning into play—Arts, Language and Literacy, Mathematics and Numeracy, PDMU, PE, WAU, and ICT. This holistic method allows children to explore, discover, and make sense of the world around them in a meaningful and connected way. This year, our exciting topics include Rainbows, Transport, In the Garden, Under the Sea, and Fairytales—each designed to spark curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning!

Sensory Curriculum
Our sensory curriculum is designed to support children's emotional regulation, focus, and overall well-being through a variety of stimulating and calming activities. Each day begins with sensory circuits to help children prepare for learning. We incorporate sensory-based play, messy play, and cookery sessions to engage the senses in fun and meaningful ways. Children also take part in Attention Autism sessions, which are always lively, captivating, and full of joy. Additional activities such as sensory massage, dough disco, breathing therapy, and TacPac provide opportunities for relaxation, self-expression, and sensory integration, making every day a rich and rewarding experience.

ICT

Technology is seamlessly woven into our daily classroom experiences. With access to computers, interactive whiteboards, and iPads, children develop essential digital skills that prepare them for the modern world. We encourage responsible and creative use of ICT to support communication, collaboration, and learning across the curriculum.

PE

Our PE days are Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. This year we will develop our skills in gymnastics, athletics, games, and dance. We really look forward to our Acti-Sport sessions with Graham.
